Recurring H5P-to-SCORM export issues: Missing dependencies and broken interactions
Hello Lumi Support Team,
I am a nursing instructor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. I use H5P to create interactive learning scenarios for nursing students.
I typically create activities in UBC's H5P Open Hub, download the .h5p files, import them into Lumi Online, and export them as SCORM packages for graded assignments (for minimal/completion grades) in Canvas.
Platform information:
Lumi: Lumi Online (Lumi Cloud), not Lumi Desktop
H5P Core: Version 1.28, according to Lumi's September 7, 2026 changelog (not independently verified in my account)
Export format: SCORM 1.2
Learning Management System: Canvas LMS
Original H5P authoring environment: UBC H5P Open Hub
I have encountered several recurring problems with these SCORM exports. The original activities work correctly in H5P and Lumi, but some fail after being imported into Canvas.
1. Missing JavaScript dependencies — H5P Page (Column)
Content type: H5P Page (H5P.Column 1.22), containing Image Hotspots, Drag the Words, Advanced Fill in the Blanks, and Multiple Choice.
Problem: The entire Page was blank when launched as a SCORM assignment in Canvas, although all activities worked correctly in Lumi.
Chrome Developer Tools reported:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'Draggable')
After removing Drag the Words from a test copy, the Page remained blank and produced:
Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'Button')
Diagnosis: The original .h5p package contained H5P.Components 1.0, but the Lumi-generated SCORM package did not include the required JavaScript and CSS files.
Successful workaround: We extracted the missing library files from the original .h5p package and inserted them into the SCORM export, updating the HTML to load them. The Page then displayed correctly in Canvas, and all its interactive activities worked.
Canvas gradebook reporting has not yet been verified.
2. Interactive Book — Cover overlay obstructs Read button
Content type: H5P Interactive Book.
Problem: Several Interactive Books displayed a diagonal grey strip across their covers after export to SCORM. The strip obscured the cover and interfered with clicking the Read button.
Successful workaround: Editing the exported index.html and replacing:
mask-size:500%;opacity:1
with:
mask-size:500%;opacity:0;pointer-events:none
This resolved the cover problem in multiple scenarios without changing the educational content.
3. Dialog Cards — Display and navigation failures
Content type: H5P Dialog Cards, both embedded within Interactive Books and used as standalone activities.
Problem: After SCORM export and import into Canvas, Dialog Cards sometimes display only partially. The Turn button may be missing or unresponsive, and the Next button may not advance to the next card. In one example, the first card slid away but the activity remained stuck at “Card 1 of 7.”
We attempted several CSS and JavaScript modifications, but did not establish a reliable SCORM repair.
Workaround: For an ungraded standalone Dialog Cards activity, embedding the original H5P directly into a Canvas page resolved the problem. The cards, audio, flipping, and navigation all function correctly when embedded.
The underlying cause of the SCORM-specific Dialog Cards failures remains unconfirmed.
4. Reporting/request for assistance
These problems have occurred across multiple activities and have required considerable troubleshooting before the activities could be released to students.
I primarily want to report these issues so that you can identify and hopefully resolve the problems
If needed, I can provide the original .h5p files, failing SCORM packages, browser error messages, and examples of repaired packages to assist your investigation.
Thank you for your assistance. I appreciate Lumi's ability to make H5P learning activities available through SCORM and hope these findings will help improve compatibility and reliability.
Kind regards,
Charlene Strumpel [email protected]
